DES MOINES, IA – The Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO met today in Des Moines and held is 22nd Biennial COPE (Committee on Political Education) Convention to make endorsements for the 2024 primary and general elections. The COPE Convention is where local unions from all over the state of Iowa come together to vote on endorsements together and decide who to support.
The Iowa AFL-CIO endorsed Christina Bohannan in Iowa’s 1st Congressional District, Sarah Corkery in Iowa 2nd Congressional District, and Lanon Baccam in Iowa’s Third District, as well as Ryan Melton in Iowa’s 4th District.
“The United States House of Representatives is the most dysfunctional body possible at one of the most important times in American history. From constant leadership changes and infighting, refusing to address problems our citizens need to have, and a refusal to even attempt to work with others only for the sake of politics shows a need for new leadership in Washington, D.C. and it cannot come soon enough,” said Charlie Wishman, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
The Iowa AFL-CIO also made endorsements for the Iowa House and Senate and endorsed candidates from both parties.
“In Iowa we’re building a pro-worker majority, and that includes Republicans and Democrats. While there needs to be leadership changes in the House and Senate majorities, we will seek to work with and support anyone who matches our values in the statehouse,” said Peter Hird, Secretary/Treasurer of the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO.
